Studies have shown that the average employee changes careers roughly every 4 years. Reports also show that on average individuals will have over 10 jobs during their lifetime.

These findings point to one undeniable fact of life.

Change is inevitable.

Whether you’re looking for another job that better suits your skills or you just want a change in work-life balance, changing careers is something many of us will tackle.

Here are 3 strategies you can use to help make the transition into any new field by attracting recruiters.

Strategy #1: The LinkedIn Lure

LinkedIn.com is a social networking site for career professionals. It asserts itself as the largest professional network on the internet.

And that’s for good reason.

The site has over 60 million users which continues to increase every year. It’s also reported that as of today 97% of recruiters use LinkedIn to search, vet and review potential candidates for jobs. And signing up on the site is absolutely free!

Actions to take for this strategy:

  • Build a “Complete” LinkedIn Profile
  • Join Groups Relevant to Your Chosen Field
  • Follow Professionals in Your Chosen Field
  • Post Content Regularly
  • Respond to Relevant Posts Regularly

LinkedIn gives its users the opportunity to take skill tests which you can also use to increase the visibility of your profile and showcase your expertise. Your goal should be to stand out amongst candidates as the best possible choice for the position.

There’s an awesome book titled “Linked” by Omar Garriott and Jeremy Schifeling that gives you a step by step rundown on how to actually build your profile and stand out on LinkedIn. By the end of the book you’ll have robust checklist that they build upon throughout the chapters which you can use to make sure your profile is nice and shiny for recruiters!
